On Learning a Language

When my friend’s wife entered university, she was excited to study history — her favorite subject. But to her dismay, the first year was filled almost entirely with language classes. “I wanted to learn about the past,” she would later say, “not just memorize grammar.”

But perhaps language is not just grammar. Perhaps every article and preposition carries the weight of a culture, a way of seeing the world. To teach a language, then, is to teach a worldview. And to learn a language is to step into another way of being.

Maybe if students were told, “You are learning a culture,” they would listen more closely — not just to the words, but to the silences between them.
